Gris is an experience unlike most games you’ll find in that it gives you an intimate glimpse into the psyche of someone dealing with grief. And it’s through this game’s dynamic use of color that it does so. In this episode of Psych of Play, we will be taking a truly deep dive into the world of Gris and how it uses its colors and in game mechanics to illustrate the complexities of loss and bereavement.

  1. Can I just vent my frustration that he's flipped the wavelengths of light upside down? Red. Lowest frequency, longest wavelength, highest number. Blue. Highest frequency, shortest wavelength, lowest number/

  2. We showed this video in the video games as literature club at school and I was so moved I went home and played the game for the first time! It was so good!

  3. It should be noted that Kübler-Ross has said over and over and over again that the five stages are ONLY a framework, that they do not necessarily go in order or only happen once and that they are specifically not meant to make grief or dying "tidy". Rather they are there so you can recognized pasterns in yourself when they arise. They give you something to grab onto to let you know you are not alone in feeling or thinking these things and that you should not feel ashamed because of them. Most of all they do not proscribe a single path for everyone; your path through grief can only be determined by you.

The idea of "do these steps and you will have taken care of your grief" was created, championed and then demonized by the media. There are legit critiques of the model (such as its potentially cultural specific nature) but this has never been one of them. If anyone is interested here is an excellent podcast about Kübler-Ross, death and grief by Brene Brown and Kübler-Ross' protege David Kessler: https://brenebrown.com/podcast/david-kessler-and-brene-on-grief-and-finding-meaning/

  4. This is a amazing Video, i absolutely love this game and how much it makes u feel.
I love how u explain it all and at the same time can only admire the devs for using knowledge like this in a game.

  5. It makes me angry that my classmate said that what he is depressed and stressed when there is nothing at all stressing him besides from some homework and being called to answer question.i think people should not use the word depressed like nothing as people who have really gone through depression had a hard time to get out of it like how changing stages in grief is.

  6. 100% correct. Both in colour theory and in the secrets through the game. I was playing it just now and got a secret in the underwater section (in the bottom pit, the one with red and black colours, you should swim to the left to find a statue on a woman, drowning) The achievement name?

    "DEPRESSION : fourth stage"

Love the video and thanks for talking about a very underrated game such as GRIS!

  7. thank you for the video. I'm in a though moment, and know that the stages are not one-way and that acceptance is a journey that neccessity continuity littles steps of effort really help me to feel more normal, and the real acceptance of Denial, Fear and all the emotions is something that i really sttrugle, because i try to block the majority of sentiments.
